FORT WAYNE, IN - The West Michigan Whitecaps enjoyed a breakout offensive performance as part of a 12-3 victory over the Fort Wayne TinCaps in the first game of a doubleheader Friday night at Parkview Field.
The second game saw a pitcher's duel go the way of the TinCaps as the 'Caps fell by a score of 2-1.
The first game saw West Michigan score eight of their 12 runs in the first three innings. In the opening frame, Parker Meadows highlighted a four-run rally with a two-run single. An inning later, Ulrich Bojarski launched a two-run double in a three-run inning. Reece Hampton brought home a run in the third with a run-scoring triple. After Fort Wayne scored two in the sixth, West Michigan scored four more times in the seventh. Meadows connected for a towering home run, his second of the season, and first to have left the field of play. Meadows' first homer was of the inside-the-park variety in a game played in West Michigan against Great Lakes on April 12. Later in the inning, Bojarski chipped in with an RBI-double to conclude the scoring and cap a four-RBI performance in Game 1.
In Game 2, Jose King recorded a run-scoring double to account for the Whitecaps lone run but was shut down by TinCaps pitchers in the nightcap.
Whitecaps starter Wilkel Hernandez (2-1) allowed two runs in 5.1 innings to earn his second win of the season, while Carlos Guzman (1-2) allowed two runs and walked four batters in five frames in taking the Game 2 loss. Left-hander Joey Cantillo (0-1) gave up four runs in two-thirds of an inning in suffering the Game 1 loss, while Gabe Mosser (1-0) struck out five batters in five innings of one-run baseball, while TinCaps reliever Carlos Belen earned his second save of the year with two scoreless frames in Game 2.
West Michigan's record moves to 6-9 in 2019 while Fort Wayne improves to 9-7. The 'Caps, who scored just ten runs during their five-game losing streak, scored a season-high 12 runs to snap out of their offensive funk in Game 1 of the doubleheader. The Game 2 loss marks the 200th loss in Fort Wayne in Whitecaps history. West Michigan still holds an all-time advantage in the series, leading 228-200 in games played between the teams.
