COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Pitcher Adam Wolf tossed 6.2 impressive innings, but the Bowling Green Hot Rods manufactured enough offense late to seal a 3-2 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps in front of 4,297 fans at Fifth Third Ballpark on Wednesday afternoon.
Wolf, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, allowed only two runs on four hits and seven strikeouts, but the offense failed to produce, compiling only six hits in the defeat.
West Michigan plated a run in the first inning as Chris Proctor lifted a bloop-single to left field before an errant throw from Hot Rod third baseman Jake Palomaki to second base scored Johnny Valente to give the 'Caps a 1-0 lead. Both teams combined for just four hits until the seventh inning as Palomaki stroked a game-tying double before a run-scoring go-ahead single by Beau Brundage to give Bowling Green its first lead of the day with a 2-1 advantage. Both teams added a run in the eighth to bring the score to 3-2 in favor of Bowling Green. In the ninth, Daniel Reyes was hit by a pitch to begin the frame, but Avery Tuck failed to lay down a successful sacrifice bunt before grounding into a rally-spoiling double play, quelling the 'Caps rally as they fell to the Bowling Green Hot Rods, and for the eighth time in their last ten ballgames.
Wolf (2-5) takes his fifth loss of the season, while Sampen (3-2) tossed six frames giving up one run on only four hits in notching his third win. Bowling Green reliever Joel Peguero tossed a scoreless ninth inning to collect his fourth save of the year. Bowling Green improves to 26-20 on the year while the Whitecaps fall to 18-27. 'Caps catcher Chris Proctor extended his multi-hit hitting streak to six games with a 2-for-4 performance while increasing his batting average to .275 on the year - lifting his batting average by precisely 100 points from where it was before the streak. West Michigan has now lost 16 of the 25 home games they've played at Fifth Third Ballpark this season.
