CHARLESTON, W.Va. (July 10, 2019) - Joseph Rosa and Nick Rodriguez tallied RBI singles, but West Virginia was upended by the Delmarva Shorebirds, 7-2, Wednesday night at Appalachian Power Park.
Clay Chandler (7-5) looked impressive early with a perfect first inning that included two strikeouts. The Power (9-11, 46-44) lineup was stifled in the first inning by Hector Guance (7-3), as they were set down looking on three straight strikeouts. However, West Virginia knocked in the first run of the ballgame just an inning later thanks to a couple of walks and a two-out Rosa RBI single that gave them a 1-0 lead.
Chandler continued to deal, as he held the Shorebirds (15-5, 63-26) scoreless into the fourth, tallying three strikeouts in the first three frames. Delmarva got on the board in the fourth with a solo homer from Seamus Curran that tied the game at one. The Shorebirds then ended Chandler's outing with a fifth-inning rally that included four runs on four hits, with three of those going for extra bases to give Delmarva a 5-1 lead.
The Power answered in the bottom half of the inning on a two-out triple from Ryan Ramiz and Rodriguez's RBI single to shrink the deficit to 5-2.
With West Virginia down three, Matthew Willrodt, who closed the fifth inning for Chandler, surrendered two earned runs in the sixth that grew the Delmarva lead to a commanding 7-2 advantage.
Guance concluded his outing in the sixth, finishing with a season-high nine strikeouts across his quality start. Reeves Martin registered two scoreless innings and collected a career-best four strikeouts along the way. Benjamin Onyshko clocked in for a scoreless inning out of the bullpen as well, striking out the side in the process.
Juan Echevarria (S,1) shut down the West Virginia lineup over his three innings of duty to pick up the save, as he surrendered just two hits and sealed the Shorebirds' 7-2 win.
