CHARLESTON, W. Va. (April 12 2019) - Jarred Kelenic torched his first South Atlantic League home run in the fifth inning, but West Virginia was overpowered by Augusta, 9-3, Friday evening at Appalachian Power Park.
Kelenic's blast went 369 feet to right-center field, at that point closing the Power's deficit to 4-2. The Mariners' number two prospect collected the seventh home run of his Minor League career.
West Virginia (3-5) didn't waste any time carrying the momentum over from last night's win, as the Power scored a run in the first inning off an Onil Pena RBI double following a perfect frame from their starter, Elias Espino (0-1).
Augusta (4-4) answered in the top of the third with an RBI double from Ismael Munguia to tie the game at one. Munguia scored a couple batters later on a passed ball to hand the GreenJackets a 2-1 lead.
Their advantage grew to 3-1 in the fourth thanks to a Cesar Izturis Jr. error that extended the inning, followed by a Jose Layer RBI single that drove in Wander Franco. In the top of the fifth, Frankie Tostado drilled the first home run against a Power pitcher in 2019, pushing the GreenJackets' lead to 4-1.
The Kelenic dinger brought the Power within two, but Augusta tacked on a two runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 6-2. Pena continued his hot night with his second double of the game to lead off the eighth inning, scoring later in the frame on Charlie McConnell's RBI single. The GreenJackets blew it open in the top of the ninth with four singles and three more runs to pad their 9-3 lead.
Tyler Schimpf (1-0) earned the win over allowing one run on three hits over two innings of work.
