CHARLESTON, W.Va. (April 16, 2019) - Clay Chandler's six scoreless innings and Jarred Kelenic's four-hit night lifted the Power to a 7-1 win over the Lakewood BlueClaws Tuesday evening at Appalachian Power Park.
Chandler (1-0) dominated over his six innings of work, shutting down the Lakewood lineup to the tune of two hits and four walks while striking out three and recording his second straight quality start.
West Virginia (7-5) got on the scoreboard first in the third, as Kelenic worked a one-out walk and Onil Pena followed with a laced double into left-center field, scoring Kelenic for a 1-0 lead.
In the next inning, Joseph Rosa led off with a single against Lakewood (3-10) starter Jhordany Mezquita (0-2), who would counter by retiring the next two Power hitters. Charlie McConnell then ripped a single into right field to extend the inning with two outs for Cesar Izturis Jr., who promptly doubled on the first pitch of his at-bat, plating two to push West Virginia ahead 3-0.
Mezquita was then replaced by Ethan Evanko, who walked Ryne Ogren and allowed a single to Kelenic to load the bases with two down for Pena. For the second straight inning, Pena delivered with a two-out base hit, bringing in two more to extend the Power's lead to 5-0.
West Virginia would add another run in the bottom of the seventh on a Jake Anchia RBI single to move the lead to 6-0.
Right-hander Devin Sweet entered for Chandler in the seventh and worked through the eighth, ceding just one unearned run and retiring four BlueClaws on strikes.
With a 6-1 Power lead in the bottom of the eighth, Kelenic continued his scorching hot homestand with his fourth hit of the night, this time an RBI double down the right-field line, vaulting the Power's advantage to 7-1.
