CHARLESTON, W. Va. (August 31, 2019) - Christian Pedrol tossed a quality start in his West Virginia debut, but the Power fell to the Greensboro Grasshoppers, 3-1, Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park.
West Virginia (30-37, 67-70) opened the scoring in the first, as Mike Salvatore worked a one-out walk and both Ryan Ramiz and Matt Sanders singled to make it 1-0 Power. Pedrol (0-1) dealt early in his outing, as he struck out four and tossed two scoreless innings to start his Low-A debut.
However, Greensboro (35-32, 79-57) scratched across a run in the third inning after Jonah Davis was caught in a rundown that allowed Kyle Mottice to score from third and tie the ballgame at one. The Grasshoppers then crushed back-to-back homers in the fourth from Luke Mangieri and Grant Koch that pushed Greensboro ahead 3-1. The back-to-back jacks marked the first time that an opponent has achieved the feat against West Virginia since Greensboro did it on June 1, 2018, with Micah Brown and Marcos Rivera.
Pedrol settled down and closed out his second career quality start without surrendering a run over his final two frames, tallying a career-high nine strikeouts. Will Kobos (2-3) locked in for Greensboro, as he conceded just three hits and one run over his five innings of work. The Greensboro bullpen combined for four scoreless frames and allowed just one hit, as Yerry De Los Santos (S,13) closed out the 3-1 Grasshoppers win.
