Dayton (1-2) scored a pair of runs in the second inning and added another in the fifth to grab a 3-0 lead.

The Whitecaps trailed 3-1 going into the ninth after reliever Chad Smith kept it close with 2 2/3 shutout innings. However, the Dragons broke it open with five runs off relievers Angel Nesbitt and Julio Felix.

West Michigan added a pair of runs in the ninth. Mike Hernandez and Adolfo Reina had run-scoring hits.
