The New Orleans Baby Cakes scored four times in the seventh inning to pull away from the Oklahoma City Dodgers, winning 6-1 on Friday night at Bricktown Ballpark in the opener of the season's final series.
Baby Cakes starter Joe Gunkel (8-2) completed his strong second half by pitching six innings and scattering seven hits while recording seven strikeouts. He also scored what proved to be the game-winning run after a leadoff single in the third inning, helping himself on his way to a league-best seventh victory since the All-Star break.
The teams traded first-inning runs, with Eddy Alvarez's RBI single putting the 'Cakes on top only for Kyle Garlick's sacrifice fly in the bottom half evening the score.
Gunkel's single in the third turned into the Baby Cakes' second run when Dodgers starter J.D. Martin (3-3) unleashed a wild pitch. Neither team managed another tally until the seventh, when New Orleans put the game out of reach by batting around.
Yadiel Rivera, Gabriel Guerrero and Wilkin Castillo delivered consecutive RBI singles, and Magneuris Sierra drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the fourth run of the frame against reliever Jaime Schultz.
Jordan Milbrath and Brett Graves combined to limit Oklahoma City to one hit over the final three innings, sending the Dodgers to their 12th defeat in the last 15 games.
The four-game set continues on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
