New Orleans scored three runs in the eighth inning to come from behind and defeat the San Antonio Missions on Friday night, 4-2, giving the Baby Cakes their seventh straight road win and fourth in a row overall.
The 'Cakes have closed within four games of San Antonio for second place in the division as the Missions lost their eighth consecutive game. Round Rock remains 6 1/2 games in front of New Orleans for first place.
Tied 1-1 in the seventh, San Antonio capitalized on a leadoff walk to take the lead on Cory Spangenberg's ground out, but the Baby Cakes responded in the eighth. Singles by Peter O'Brien and Jesus Sanchez, coupled with a throwing error, allowed the 'Cakes to grab the lead, and Yadiel Rivera followed with an infield single to plate an insurance run.
Mike Kickham (3-4) worked 3 2/3 innings of relief to pick up the win, Dylan Lee pitched the eighth and R.J. Alvarez tossed a perfect ninth to notch his 15th save.
Pablo Lopez, on a rehab assignment from the Marlins, made the start and lasted 4 1/3 innings.
Veterans Shelby Miller and Jimmy Nelson covered the first seven innings for San Antonio, combining to allow one run and three hits.
Looking for only the third eight-game road winning streak in franchise history, New Orleans plays the third game of the series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
