Cutters Complete Comeback

Burlington, V.T.- The Crosscutters trailed 4-0 heading into the 5th, only to come back and hand the Vermont Lake Monsters a 9-6 loss to open the road trip.

Jhordany Mezquita had his shortest start of the season, allowing three runs on four walks and a single over two-thirds of an inning, as the Lake Monsters took a 3-0 lead. The lefty struck out the first batter he faced before losing his command.

 

Rafael Carvajal entered to get the final out of the bottom of the 1st. Carvajal allowed a run in the bottom of the 2nd inning, as Vermont upped their advantage to 4-0. Carvajal finished his night, with a clean 3rd inning, being relieved with a 4-0 deficit.

 

Robinson Martinez made his Cutters debut, allowing a single to the first batter ha faced, before retiring the next six batters he faced over the 4th and 5th innings.

 

Williamsport tied the game in the top of the 5th inning, using a Vermont error to propel the rally. Danny Mayer drilled a two-run home run well over the left field wall, scoring Madison Stokes to make it 4-2. Brayan Gonzalez and Jesus Henriquez each added an RBI single in the frame to tie the game at 4-4.

 

Vermont re-took the lead in the bottom of the 6th inning, using a two-out error by shortstop Jonathan Guzman that allowed the go-ahead run to score to give the Lake Monsters a 5-4 lead. It was the only run that was scored against Martinez in his debut.

 

Jesse Wilkening re-tied the game in the top of the 7th inning, dropping a RBI single into right field, chasing home Ben Pelletier to knot the game at 5-5.

 

Randy Alcantara got the final out of the 6th inning, but the Lake Monsters got to him in the bottom of the 7th, as Johan Bride homered to left to give Vermont the lead back at 6-5. It was the first home run allowed by Alcantara this season.

 

Tyler Carr entered in the bottom of the 8th inning, retiring the Lake Monsters in order, picking up a strikeout along the way.

 

Williamsport took their first lead in the top of the 9th inning, getting a RBI single from Jesse Wilkening to make it a 6-6 game. After a Jesus Henriquez bunt hugged the 3rd base line and hit the bag, putting runners at 1st and 2nd, Ben Aklinski nearly cleared the left field wall, doubling home Rafael Marchan and Henriquez to give Williamsport a 8-6 lead.

 

Jonathan Guzman flared a single to right-center, scoring Aklinski to give the Cutters a 9-6 lead and capping the Williamsport offense.

 

Keylan Killgore pitched a perfect frame in the 9th, picking up his 4th save and getting Carr his first win in a Cutters uniform.

 

The Crosscutters continue their three-game series in Vermont tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

 

Cutter Carvings - Every Crosscutters starter recorded at least one hit in the win... It was the first time this season the Crosscutters won when trailing after after 8 innings (1-13)... Ben Pelletier recorded his 2nd, 3-hit night of the season... The Crosscutters pounded out a season-high 16 hits...
