State College, Pa. – In just their second game over the last twelve days, the Williamsport Crosscutters were able to use a strong pitching performance and an offense capitalizing on six State College errors and ten walks to snap a four-game losing streak, defeating the Spikes 10-2 in Happy Valley.

Nick Cosentino got the start for Williamsport and showed a return to his early season form in his three innings of work. After retiring the first four Spikes he faced in order, Cosentino allowed a single and an RBI double in the 2nd inning, giving State College the early 1-0 lead.

Following those two hits, Cosentino would start a streak of 14 Spikes batters being retired in order that reached into the 7th inning and covered the outings from the bullpen of Kyle Murphy and Brian Rodriguez.

During that streak, the Crosscutters were able to use three Spikes errors and their first hit of the ballgame to take the lead. Sean Ross, leading off the 5th inning, was able to get things started as he reached via the first Spikes error, stole second, and advanced to third base on another Spikes error. This was quickly followed by a Noah Hemphill strikeout, but Hemphill was still able to reach on a dropped third strike, assisted by the third error by the Spikes in just two at-bats. Steven Nitch would capitalize with a 2 RBI double that scored both Ross and Hemphill, while Nitch would take third as well on a throw home, and then score on a wild pitch, giving the Cutters a 3-1 lead.

Tyler LaPorte would come on to pitch in the 7th for Williamsport and found himself in some trouble after the streak of 14 Spikes batters being retired ended, surrendering a walk and a hit before a 4-3 double play would end the threat.

The Cutters offense would explode in the 8th inning, thanks in a big way to State College struggles once again. The first six Williamsport batters would be walked by Spikes pitching, and three Cutters scored in that time period as Michael Turconi scored on a wild pitch and two more runs came from RBI walks by Steven Nitch and Ramone Bramasco, scoring Sean Ross and Alec Burns respectively. Later in the inning, Freddie Matos would push across two more runs on a ground ball that resulted in yet another Spikes error, scoring Nitch and Bramasco. The final two runs of the inning were scored via an RBI double from Dakota Kotowski, pushing across Lance Logsdon and Freddie Matos for the 6th and 7th runs of the inning, and giving Williamsport a 10-1 lead going into the middle of the 8th.

State College would respond as Jerome Bohannon entered from the bullpen and surrendered two Spikes runs, both earned, on one hit and three walks. Those runs would cap the scoring for both teams as Chase Plymell closed things out on the hill for Williamsport, only allowing one more runner to reach via a hit by pitch, bringing Williamsport to their 10-3 road victory over State College.

Kyle Murphy, in his first appearance in a Crosscutters uniform, earns the win for Williamsport and now holds a 1-0 record in the MLB Draft League. Drew Garrett is charged with the loss for State College, falling to 1-1 on the season.

With the win, Williamsport improves to 17-19-2 in their 2021 campaign while State College falls to 17-23.
