Auburn, N.Y. - Crosscutters pitching again combined for a stellar effort on the road in a 3-2 victory at the Auburn Doubledays on Thursday night. Leonel Aponte, Hsin-Chieh Lin (W, 1-0) and Rafael Carvajal (S, 2) limited Auburn to just four hits only one day after three other Cutters pitchers had combined on a two-hit shutout in the series opener.
Johan Rojas went 3-for-4 with his league-leading fifth triple. Hunter Hearn had an RBI single. And Logan O'Hoppe had a single, RBI and run scored while also throwing out his 12th attempted base-stealer of the season. Corbin Williams picked up his 26th stolen base of the season which is tops in the NYPL.
Bryson Stott was 2-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to eight games. The Phillies first-rounder has gone 15-for-31 (.484) in the streak including three doubles, one triple and three home runs.
Carvajal wrapped up his second save of the season with a five-strikeout stint in just two innings. He has allowed just one earned run in his last 17.2 innings since July 12.
Williamsport struck in the top of the first after back-to-back singles by Corbin Wiliams and Nate Fassnacht to begin the game. Stott bunted the runners into scoring position and O'Hoppe's ground out brought home Williams for a 1-0 lead.
Auburn responded quickly against Aponte in the bottom of the first on a double to left-center by Ricardo Mendez leading to a tying tally after he stole third and then came in on an Onix Vega sacrifice fly to center.
The Cutters regained the lead in the fourth in a two-run rally that began with three straight singles by O'Hoppe, Rudy Rott and Rojas. Torres hit a grounder into the hole at short that was ruled a force out of Rojas at second on a close play that also drove in O'Hoppe with the go-ahead run. And Hunter Hearn then deliver an RBI single to left to plate Rott for a 3-1 lead.
The Doubledays countered with a single run in the bottom of the fifth with Jake Alu singling and then advancing on a wild pitch and an error. e came home on a single to left by Calidoli Sanfler for a 3-2 game but Sanfler was fired out at second trying to stretch the play to a double on a strong throw by Johan Rojas in left.
After that the Doubledays had no more hits and just two more base-runners. A single led to a caught stealing in the sixth. And Carvajal hit a batter in the eighth while otherwise striking out the side. He capped another Cutters dominating pitching performance with a perfect ninth inning including his fourth and fifth strikeouts.
Earlier in the day it was announced that four Crosscutters have been selected to play in the New York-Penn League All-Star Game at Staten Island on Wednesday, August 21. Logan O'Hoppe, Kendall Simmons, Bryson Stott and Corbin Williams will all be representing the Cutters in the league's showcase classic.
The Crosscutters will look to sweep the road series at Auburn on Friday at 7:05 p.m. with RHP Victor Vargas making his first start.
