Niles, O.H.- Edwin Rodriguez drove in three and scored the fourth Cutters run as Williamsport handed Mahoning Valley a 4-1 loss in the series opener.

Madison Stokes sparked the Cutters first run of the night, sending a two-out single into center field, bringing Edwin Rodriguez to the plate. Rodriguez drilled a Zack Draper offering off the base of the wall in left-center, chasing home Stokes with a RBI double to give the Cutters an early 1-0 lead.

Jhordany Mezquita battle with his pitch count throughout most of his outing, and found himself pitching into and out of jams more often than he would have liked. Though, the only run he allowed came on a Henry Pujols solo home run in the bottom of the 2nd inning, the first home run he had surrendered this season.

Mezquita was relieved after retiring the first batter in the bottom of the 5th inning, by Rafael Carvajal, finishing the night having allowed one run on four hits and a walk, while striking out five in 4.1 innings of work.

Carvajal was brilliant, working 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one base hit and not allowing a single walk, striking out five batters on the way to his first win in a Crosscutters uniform in 2018.

In the top of the 8th inning, the Crosscutters again turned to Edwin Rodriguez to give them a lead, as the Cutters 1st basemen sent an Adoni Kery offering deep to right-center, past a diving Tre Gantt for a two-run triple, his first of the season, scoring Rafael Marchan and Stokes to give the Cutters a 3-1 lead. It gave Rodriguez his 15th and 16th RBI.

Rodriguez would score on a Jesus Henriquez sacrifice fly, making the Cutters lead 4-1 in the top of the 8th inning. It was Henriquez's 13th RBI on the campaign.

Keylan Killgore did the rest out of the Crosscutters bullpen, working around a single in each the bottom of the 8th and the bottom of the 9th innings to close the door on the win, earning his 5th save in as many chances this season.

The Crosscutters continue their three-game series with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Eastwood Field.
