Williamsport, P.A. - Ben Pelletier's two-run double in the eighth inning propelled the Cutters to a 4-2 win over the Spikes in front of an electric crowd in Williamsport.
Jhordany Mezquita started the night looking like he would be near unhittable, retiring the first six Spikes batters that he faced. Doing so in a very efficient manner.
The south-paw ran into a little control issue in the top of the 3rd inning however, walking the first two batters that he faced, after a strikeout, Nick Dunn reached on a single to load the bases for State College.
Edwin Figuera was then plunked by a Mezquita pitch, plating Delvin Perez to give the Spikes an early 1-0 advantage and keeping the bases full with one away.
Mezquita bared down and retired the next two batters he faced without allowing another run to score, limiting to damage to one run.
Williamsport would respond in the bottom of the 3rd, capitalizing on a lead off walk drawn by Brayan Gonzalez against Spikes starter Angel Rondon.
With Gonzalez at 2nd base after his first stolen base of the season, and one out, Edwin Rodriguez doubled to deep center to score Gonzalez and tie the game at 1-1. For Rodriguez, it was his fourth double and his sixth run batted in on the season.
Jonathan Guzman sparked the Cutters offense in the bottom of the 5th inning with a double down the left field line. Matt Vierling plated Guzman with a double to deep left, giving Williamsport their first lead of the night at 2-1. For Vierling it was his third double and fifth RBI of the season.
Mezquita was relieved in the top of the 6th inning. Allowing one run on two hits, while walking two and striking out five State College hitters.
Randy Alcantara entered and was perfect, literally. The right-hander retired all nine batters that he faced over three innings of relief, using his defense to record all nine outs.
In the bottom of the 8th inning, in search of some insurance runs, Ben Pelletier delivered one of his biggest hits of the young season, drilling a Cory Malcom offering into the left-center gap to chase home Keudy Bocio and Rafael Marchan to give the Cutters a 4-1 lead.
For Pelletier, it was his third double of the season and upped his RBI total to seven.
Luis Ramirez entered in the top of the 9th, and ran into a little bit of trouble, finding himself in a bases loaded situation with no outs.
Ramirez was able to induce a double-play to get a pair of outs, but it allowed Wadye Ynfante to score and cut the deficit to 4-2.
After the run scored, Ramirez struck out Delvin Perez to slam the door on his third save of the season.
The Crosscutters make their way to State College for the middle game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. At Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
