Niles, O.H. - Edwin Rodriguez blasted his first home run of the season as Williamsport pounded out 12 hits in their 8-1 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.
Phillies 2018 first round selection Alec Bohm made his Crosccutters debut, batting in the 3rd spot in the order as the designated hitter. Bohm collected his first hit in Williamsport on a frozen rope single to right field in the top of the third inning, finishing 1 for 5 on the night.
Williamsport broke on to the scoreboard in the top of the third inning, using a bases clearing double to left field off the bat of Ben Pelletier, scoring Edwing Rodriguez, Matt Vierling and Alec Bohm to give the Cutters a 3-0 lead against Scrappers starter Adoni Kery. For Pelletier, it upped his RBI total to five on the season.
Edwin Rodriguez added on to the Crosscutters lead in the top of the 4th inning, launching a Kery offering over the right-center field wall, scoring Jonathan Guzman in the process, making it a 5-0 Williamsport advantage. It was Rodriguez's first home run of the season and gave him his 3rd and 4th RBI on the year.
Mahoning Valley would not be denied runs for long, scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning against Cutters starter Manuel Silva. It would be the only run that the Scrappers would score on the evening.
Silva would not be able to record the win, despite leaving with the lead, as he was only able to finish 4.1 innings of work, allowing the lobe run on four hits, one walk and striking out four batters before being relieved by Abdallah Aris.
The Cutters would respond, as they added three more runs in the top of the sixth inning, using four-straight two-out hits to plate all three runs.
Edwin Rodriguez opened the scoring with a RBI hustle double to left-center, chasing home Seth Lancaster to make it a 6-1 Cutters advantage and giving Rodriguez his 5th RBI of the season on his 3rd double.
Matt Vierling scored Rodriguez on a double to right-center, advancing the Williamsport lead to 7-1. It was Vierling's fourth RBI on the season and his first two-bagger of the campaign.
Keudy Bocio capped the scoring with a RBI single to right-center, scoring Vierling to make it 8-1 on Bocio's fourth RBI on the season.
Aris was outstanding in relief for the Crosscutters, retiring the last 10 batters that he faced in order before being lifted after the 8th inning. Aris allowed one batter to reach, on a fielder's choice, as he struck out one Scrappers hitter, in a winning decision.
Denny Martinez threw a clean 9th inning, closing out the Crosscutters win to open up the three-game series and moving Williamsport within one game of Mahoning Valley for first place in the Pinckney division.
The Crosscutters continue their three-game series against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. At Eastwood Field.
