State College, Pa. – In an afternoon contest that hung on the final pitch of the ballgame, the Williamsport Crosscutters complete the two-game sweep of the rival State College Spikes, taking the final game of the series by a final score of 5-4.

After a scoreless first inning, Williamsport was the first to find the scoreboard in the top of the 2nd inning, taking a 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI single from Michael Turconi that scored Dusty Stroup, who reached after a dropped third strike and a passed ball.

The Spikes responded with two runs in the bottom of the 2nd, and the scoring was absent until Michael Turconi returned to the plate, recording another RBI single in the top of the 4th inning that scored Sean Ross, who led off the inning with a stand-up double, to tie the game up at 2-2.

State College would again retake the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the 5th inning with a lead-off home run off of Cutters starter Troy Taylor; one of the very few black marks against Taylor during his outing. Taylor would end his day of work after the 5th, allowing 3 runs, all earned, on seven hits, allowing no walks, and striking out six.

Before the book officially closed on Taylor, the Cutters offense would give him a send-off gift of a crooked number on the scoreboard in the top of the 6th inning. The scoring started off with Jaxon Shirley working a bases loaded walk that pushed across Sean Ross to tie the game back up once again at 3-3. Two batters later, Cutters lead-off man Rob Marinec singled into the outfield with two outs. With the runners moving on the pitch, it was enough to score both Isaac Nunez and Michael Turconi which would be the final Cutters runs of the ballgame and gave Williamsport a 5-3 lead as we flipped to the bottom of the 6th.

Will Allen would be the first to enter the ballgame from the Cutters bullpen, and would give one of the runs back in the bottom of the 6th, allowing the earned run on one hit, striking out one, walking one, and hitting one batter in his lone inning of work.

The 7th and 8th innings would see David Stiehl and Dyan Peiffer enter respectively, both shutting out the Spikes over their innings.

Williamsport looked to add an insurance run in the top of the 9th, but would leave the runner stranded before the excitement of the bottom of the 9th began.

Hunter Caudelle entered out of the Cutters bullpen with a save opportunity and, after allowing a lead-off single that put the tying run aboard, looked to regain control by striking out the next two Spikes in order. However, Caudelle struggled to get strike calls on the outside corner, walking the next two Spikes to load the bases with two outs. This setup a battle for the ballgame between Hunter Caudelle on the bump and Spikes catcher Cy Kerber at the plate.

After three foul balls and two pitches that could have been called a strike and ended the game on the outside corner, Caudelle was finally able to get the 3-2 strike three call he was looking for in front of a stunned crowd at Medlar Field as the Cutters avoided the walk-off loss and held on for a 5-4 victory that completed the weekend road sweep.

With today’s victory, Williamsport improves to 18-19-2 on the season, while State College falls to 17-24. Williamsport starter Troy Taylor earns the win, improving to 4-1 on the year. Hunter Caudelle earned the save for the Cutters, his third of the year.
