Wilmington, DE- Rito Lugo was named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for the period August 5-11 the league office announced on Monday. It marks the third weekly award for Wilmington's pitching staff this season Right-hander Jonathan Bowlan was recognized for the period July 15-22 thanks to his no-hitter against Carolina on July 15 while southpaw Daniel Lynch was the first to be recognized for the period May 20-27.

Lugo earns the award after posting back-to-back scoreless starts this week with a career-high 6.2 innings of shutout ball against Fayetteville on August 6 and adding 5.2 more scoreless frames in his most recent start on Sunday at Myrtle Beach. The left-hander currently has not allowed a run over his last three straight starts, spanning 18.1 innings.
The 23-year-old Venezuelan was signed as an international free agent by the Kansas City Royals last July. After spending his first pro season at three different stops at the Rookie level, Lugo skipped Low-A entirely and was named to the Blue Rocks' Opening Day roster this season. Despite starting the year out of the bullpen, the left-hander has excelled when called upon to make a spot start this season for the Rocks.
In 10 starts, he is 2-0 with a remarkable 0.72 ERA in 49.2 innings of work while opponents are hitting just .170 against him with a 0.79 WHIP. In 17 relief appearances, Lugo is 0-3 with a 5.08 ERA in 28.1 innings. Lugo has helped the Blue Rocks boast a top-three team ERA in the Carolina League all season long, currently sitting at second in the league with a 3.09 team ERA, trailing just Down East.
The Blue Rocks return to Frawley Stadium on Tuesday, August 13 as they welcome the Lynchburg Hillcats for a three-game series. Tickets for the game are available at www.bluerocks.com Fans who can't make it to the game can listen to the action with the Voice of the Blue Rocks Cory Nidoh on the Blue Rocks Radio Network on 89.7 WGLS-FM.
