MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (April 9, 2018) - Luis Basabe stroked a go-ahead RBI single in the ninth inning, and Mike Morrison threw two hitless innings of relief as Winston-Salem secured a series-opening, 6-4 victory on Monday against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
With the contest tied at four heading in the final frame, the Dash (2-3) went to work against Myrtle Beach right-hander Chad Hockin (0-1). Mitch Roman started off the rally with a one-out single, and he moved to second on a wild pitch with Basabe at the plate. Down in the count 0-2, Basabe grounded the deciding hit into right to give Winston-Salem a 5-4 edge. Later in the inning, Blake Rutherford capped off the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
Morrison (1-0), who played collegiately for nearby Coastal Carolina University and was a key member of the program's 2016 College World Series championship team, tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth frame to earn his third career High-A win.
The Pelicans (1-4) jumped out to an early lead in the second against Dash right-hander Ricardo Pinto, who was making his White Sox organizational debut after being acquired for international signing bonus pool money in March from Philadelphia. With a runner on second and two down, Aramis Ademan tripled to right to put Myrtle Beach ahead 1-0. Two batters later, P.J. Higgins stroked a two-run single, giving the Pelicans a 3-0 edge. Pinto went 1.2 innings, allowing three hits and three runs while walking three and striking out one.
Winston-Salem struck back in the third against Pelicans starter Alex Lange. Nate Nolan led off the inning with a double, and three batters later, Rutherford lined a run-scoring double to left-center to make it a two-run contest.
Myrtle Beach plated its final run in the fourth against Dash righty Luis Martinez, who otherwise was superb on Monday, registering 5.1 innings of long relief.
The Dash's stretch of five unanswered runs started in the fifth. Following a fielding error by Pelicans third baseman Austin Upshaw that allowed Ti'Quan Forbes to reach base, Nolan ripped an RBI double to right to slice the lead to two.
In the sixth, Winston-Salem put runners on first and second against Jordan Minch, setting the stage for Micker Adolfo. On a 2-1 pitch, Adolfo roped an RBI double to left-center make it a 4-3 contest. The Dash later loaded the bases with two outs, and Nolan drew a game-tying RBI walk against Tyler Peyton.
