Dash Split Doubleheader with Hickory 1-1

Hickory takes series by at least four games

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (July 10, 2021) — The Winston-Salem Dash split a Saturday doubleheader with the Hickory Crawdads at one game apiece, winning the first game 9-6 and losing the second game 8-7.

Game one featured a start by K**aleb Roper* who gave up a first-pitch home run to *Miguel Aparicio**, giving Hickory a 1-0 edge.

The Dash offense exploded in the second inning as Hickory starter Zak Kent gave up two homers to put the Dash ahead 4-1. Luis Curbelo smacked his 12th longball of the year and was followed by Travis Moniot who clubbed a two-run shot to right for his sixth homerun of 2021.

Hickory answered mightily in the third with two homers of their own to tie the game at 4. Jake Guenther blasted a leadoff solo bomb, followed by a Blaine Crim two-run home run to mark his 12th on the year.

Trey Jeans entered in the fifth for the Dash but was knocked around by Hickory to take the lead in the sixth. With one away, Trey Hair lifted his fourth home run over the wall to put the Crawdads in front 5-4. Jared Walker took a base on balls and added some insurance on a single to left field by Pedro Gonzalez.

The Dash found their offensive stride in the sixth and ran away with the game. Travis Moniot and Duke Ellis drew back-to-back walks and were followed by Ian Dawkins, who was hit by a pitch to load the bases. All three touched the plate on a double by Yolbert Sanchez and the Dash took a 7-6 lead. Eloy Jimenez made his first appearance in his rehab stint and treated fans to a two-run homer in his final plate appearance to secure a 9-6 Dash victory.

Jeans (2-1) was awarded the win and was backed up by Caleb Freeman, who collected his fifth save of the season. Justin Marsden (0-1) took the loss for Hickory.

The Dash carried the offensive mojo into the second game, plating three runs in the first on a single by Luis Curbelo and a double by A.J. Gill. Winston-Salem extended the lead to 5-0 in the second as Lenyn Sosa singled to score Ian Dawkins and K**leyder Sanchez**.

Dan Metzdorf took the bump for the Dash and allowed Hickory two runs in the third. Jose Acosta plated a run on a double by Miguel Aparicio, who scored on a Frainyer Chavez single.

Vince Arobio debuted for the Dash and only lasted a third of an inning, allowing Hickory to tie the game at five with three runs on two walks and hitting two batters.

The Crawdads plated three runs in the eighth inning but were met with a rally attempt by the Dash in the home eighth. Alex Destino lifted his ninth home run over the right field wall to put Winston-Salem within a run of tying. However, Jean Casanova pitched out of the inning and collected his fourth save of the season to secure an 8-7 Hickory victory. Wilber Perez took the loss for Winston-Salem. Nick Starr earned the win for the Crawdads.

The Dash and Crawdads will square off in the series finale on Sunday afternoon with a first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET. Davis Martin will take the mound for the second time in the series.
