Winston-Salem Comes Out On Top 11-9 in Back and Forth Ballgame

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (May 3, 2022) — The Winston-Salem Dash held on in a wild series opener against the Hickory Crawdads, winning by a final score of 11-9.

Winston-Salem got on the board early, when Duke Ellis scored from third on a wild pitch. Ellis had stolen third earlier in the inning to put himself in position to take advantage of the wild pitch.

Then in the second, Harvin Mendoza added to the Dash lead with a solo home run out to right-center.

Into the third inning, where the Dash were able to string some base hits together.

Adam Hackenberg started the scoring with an RBI single to score Moises Castillo**.* Mendoza kept the train rolling with another single, which brought *Luis Mieses* in. Later, *Caberea Weaver** added two more on a single down the line in left. All told, Winston-Salem extended their lead to 6-0.

Hickory battled back hard in the top of the fourth. Trevor Hauver got the first run back with a groundout to score Evan Carter**.* Immediately after that, *Cody Freeman* laced a ball over the left field wall for a two-run blast which cut the Dash lead to 6-3. From there, Hickory was able to load the bases for *Christian Inoa**. He then lined a base hit through the left side of the infield. A series of defensive miscues allowed all three runners to come into score, and Hickory tied the game at 6-6.

Luis Mieses was able to grab the lead back for Winston-Salem in the bottom of the fourth, on an RBI groundout to plate Duke Ellis.

The Dash added two more runs in the fifth, thanks to a long two-run home run off the bat of Tyler Osik.

Hickory came back strong in the sixth inning. Aaron Zavala knocked in Thomas Saggese with a single, then a Christian Inoa double brought Randy Florentino home. Finally, a wild pitch allowed Hickory to tie the game up at 9-9.

In the bottom of the seventh, Harvin Mendoza lead off with a single. In stepped Osik, who for the second time in the game launched a two-run blast out into the Appalachian Mountain Brew-pen, a home run that gave Winston-Salem an 11-9 lead.

Theo Denlinger and Zach Cable tossed scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth respectively, as the Dash held on for an 11-9 win in the series opener. Vince Vanelle got the win, Cable earned the save, and Marc Church took the loss.
