Three Run Fourth Pushes Worcester Past Buffalo

TRENTON, N.J. — The first complete performance of the season gave the Worcester Red Sox (1-3) their first win in team history Friday night, a 4-2 victory over the Buffalo Bisons (3-1) at Trenton Thunder Ballpark.

The WooSox jumped on top in the third and never looked back, fueled by their best offensive inning of opening week. With two men on, Marcus Wilson ripped a 1-2 pitch down the left field line. By the time the ball was retrieved, Yairo Munoz and Jeter Downs had scored, and Wilson was standing on third roaring at the Worcester dugout. Chad De La Guerra followed with an RBI triple of his own, and Worcester went up 3-0 for the first lead in team history.

On the mound, WooSox starter Stephen Gonsalves tossed 5.1 innings of one-run ball and got the win. The left-hander added nine strikeouts and worked around six walks in the win. Marcus Walden, Kevin McCarthy and Kaleb Ort finished off the evening in relief, and altogether, Worcester pitching struck out a season-high 16 Bisons’ batters.

Buffalo loaded the bases in the second and fourth—both times, Worcester starter Gonsalves slipped out of trouble with strikeouts. The Bisons put a runner on every base once again in the sixth, and this time got on the board on a wild pitch from Marcus Walden. The run was charged to Gonsalves, and Walden kept it at a 3-1 game with a strikeout of his own.

In the top of the ninth, Worcester pushed across an insurance run on a Cesar Puello sac-fly. Buffalo managed one run in the home half of the frame, but Ort got Buffalo's Riley Adams looking to wrap up the first WooSox win.

Jarren Duran recorded the first ever three-hit night for the WooSox, erupting after an 0-for-11 start to his Triple-A career. Jeter Downs, the former first round draft choice, added his first hit two hits in Worcester.

The WooSox continue their six-game road series Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. against Buffalo, who is playing at the former home of the Trenton Thunder while the Toronto Blue Jays prepare to play at Sahlen Field.

After their opening week series against the Bisons, the WooSox will return home to Polar Park on Tuesday, May 11 for their historic home opener against the Syracuse Mets at 3:05 p.m.
