Stone Crabs blow out Mets 12-0

Charlotte scores all 12 runs on two-out hits
July 21, 2015

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (July 21, 2015) - The Charlotte Stone Crabs romped their way to a 12-0 victory over the St. Lucie Mets on Tuesday at Charlotte Sports Park.

Remarkably, the Stone Crabs scored all 12 runs of their runs on two-out hits. All 12 runs were scored in the first four innings. The Crabs scored two in the first, three in second, one run in the third and they opened it up with six runs in the fourth.

Charlotte did its damage against Mets starter Kevin McGowan who gave up 12 runs, all earned, on 14 hits in 3.2 innings.

All nine batters had hits for the Crabs. Eight of the nine scored a run and seven of the nine drove in a run.

Armando Araiza led the Crabs offense by going 4 for 5 with three RBI. Andrew Velazquez, Kean Wong and Marty Gantt had three hits apiece.

It is the largest margin of defeat for the Mets this year and the 12 runs ties for the most given up. The 20 hits by the Crabs are the most surrendered by the Mets.

Gantt and Pat Blair started the scoring with back-to-back RBI singles in the first. Willy Adames cracked a two-run triple in the second and Mike Marajama followed with an RBI single to make it 5-0.

A pair of two-run singles by Granden Goetzman and Araiza in the fourth finally knocked McGowan out of the game.

Relievers Kelly Secrest, David Roseboom and Robby Coles managed to keep the Crabs off the board over the final 4.1 innings, although Secrest allowed an inherited run to score.

Offensively, the Mets were shut out for the second consecutive game. They loaded the bases with two outs in the third while trailing 5-0, but Matt Oberste hit into a shift for the third out.

In a bright spot, Phil Evans singled in his final at bat to extend his hitting streak to nine games.

The Mets (48-48, 13-13) return to Tradition Field on Wednesday to take on the Brevard County Manatees. First pitch on WWE NXT Night is at 6:30 p.m. It's also All You Can Eat and a Seat for $15. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.
