Forjet Hurls Gem In Giants Shutout Of Nuts

San Jose takes series opener, 2-0; Extends Wild Card lead to four games
September 1, 2015

SAN JOSE, CA - Jason Forjet struck out a season-high 10 batters over eight scoreless innings to lead the San Jose Giants to a 2-0 victory over the Modesto Nuts on Tuesday evening at Municipal Stadium. In the opener of a pivotal three-game series, Forjet and Jake Smith combined on the Giants' league-leading 15th shutout of the season.

The win increases San Jose's (70-64) lead over Modesto (66-68) to four games in the North Division Wild Card race with six games remaining in the regular season. The Giants have won eight out of their last nine games overall.

Forjet (7-4) allowed just three singles and didn't issue a walk during his 101-pitch masterpiece to pick-up the win. The right-hander, who at one point retired 16 consecutive Modesto hitters, achieved a new career-high in innings pitched. Smith then breezed through a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning for his 16th save of the year.

Both of San Jose's runs in the contest came during the early innings. In the bottom of the second, Angel Villalona led off with a double to deep left center before Ryder Jones singled to put runners on the corners. Aramis Garcia then grounded into a 6-4-3 double play that scored Villalona with the first run of the night.

The Giants then extended their lead with a single run in the bottom of the third. After a leadoff walk to Seth Harrison, Brandon Bednar lined a single into left putting runners on first and third. Christian Arroyo then struck out with Bednar thrown out at second on the play attempting to steal. However, when Nuts catcher Troy Stein threw the ball to second, Harrison broke from third and easily beat the throw back home to push the lead to 2-0.

The two runs was enough support for Forjet. The San Jose starting pitcher surrendered a one-out single to Mike Benjamin, Jr. in the top of the first and then didn't allow another Nuts hitter to reach base until the sixth. Forjet struck out one batter in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings retiring Modesto 1-2-3 in each frame. Back-to-back strikeouts of Dillon Thomas and Troy Stein began the sixth extending Forjet's streak to 16 consecutive Nuts batters retired. Finally with two outs, Raimel Tapia blooped a single into shallow left, but Forjet recovered setting down Benjamin, Jr. on a shallow fly out to right.

With the score still 2-0, Forjet needed just six pitches to work a perfect top of the seventh. The eighth inning began with a single to center off the bat of Drew Weeks bringing the potential tying run to the plate. Forjet though induced Corelle Prime to fly out to left before registering consecutive swinging strikeouts of Thomas and Stein to end the inning and his night. Forjet retired 24 out of the 27 batters he faced.

Smith entered from the bullpen in the top of the ninth and made quick work of the Nuts. Tapia struck out swinging to start the inning before Benjamin, Jr. fouled out to first and then Rosell Herrera grounded out to second ending the game.

Modesto starter Alex Balog (3-7) suffered the loss after allowing two runs (both earned) on seven hits over seven innings. He walked two and struck out four.

Villalona (2-for-3, 2B) and Jones (2-for-3) had two hits apiece to lead the Giants offensively.
