Squandered Chances Lead to Sweep of Nuts

July 19, 2014

San Bernardino, CA. - In a 4-1 loss to the 66ers, the Nuts went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position on Friday night at San Manuel Stadium.

Missed opportunities was the key factor in the Nuts (8-20; 31-67) offense struggles in their three-game series sweep against the 66ers (11-17; 35-63). Overall the Nuts scored just four runs while going 2-for-26 with RISP in the three-game set.

On Friday night, the Nuts had a plethora of chances but could not score more than their single tally. In the fourth, the Nuts stranded two runners in scoring position. In the fifth, a lead-off walk was left at second. In the sixth, the Nuts put the first three base runners on, including a RBI single from Dave Bergin. Mike Tauchman represented the tying run while at third base with no outs, but Jordan Ribera and Pat Valaika struck out before Derek Jones hit a line drive to the shortstop to end the threat. In The seventh, the Nuts had runners at the corners with one out but could not score.

Jayson Aquino (L, 3-7) was the tough-luck loser for the Nuts on Friday night. The southpaw worked six innings and struck out six while walking one and giving up four runs, three of which were earned. Aquino also hit four batters, and tossed three wild pitches.

Ray Hanson (W, 1-2) made his best start for the 66ers this season by working six innings allowing just one run and forcing the Nuts to go 1-for-7 with RISP while he was on the mound.

Kurt Spomer (S, 5) tossed a scoreless ninth working around a two-out walk.
