Drive Squander 4-Run Lead, Lose 9-6

Koback, Renfroe each homer in losing efforts
April 15, 2012
The Drive (4-7) will hope a change of scenery on their first road trip will be beneficial, as they now head to Lexington, KY. That's because on Sunday, Greenville looked to salvage the final game of their series with the West Virginia Power (5-6), only to see their four-run lead disappear and endure a 9-6 loss.

Greenville got off to a great start, taking a 1-0 lead when Cody Koback led off the game with a solo homer to left-center field. But the Power answered in the bottom of the third when Miguel Pena (1-1) surrendered a two-run homer to Alen Hanson.

But for the third time this season, the Drive sent all nine batters to the plate in the top of the fifth, scoring five times to take a 6-2 lead. Four of the hits and all five runs came with two outs in the inning, including an RBI-single by Blake Swihart. Following runs on a wild pitch and a passed ball, David Renfroe capped the inning with a two-run homer.

The lead would be short-lived, unfortunately, as West Virginia retaliated by taking advantage of a pair of errors in the home half of the fifth for five runs of their own. Gregory Polanco, who had homered in each of the previous two games of the series, added his third straight with a devastating three-run shot to give the Power a 7-6 lead.

The Drive were never able to recover getting just two more hits in their final four at bats, as West Virginia added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the victory.

The Drive now travel to Whitaker Bank Ballpark for a three-game series with the Lexington Legends. First pitch for Monday is set for 7:05 PM as Greenville looks to end their four-game skid by sending right-hander Luis Diaz (0-1, 3.00 ERA) to the mound. Lexington will counter with right-hander Mike Foltynewicz (1-1, 2.08 ERA).

The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Thursday, April 22nd for a four-game series versus the Augusta GreenJackets. Dollar Drink Night kicks-off the Drive's brief stint at home, where fans can purchase 12 ounce Pepsi products at any of the concession stands for just $1.
