IronPigs Buried by Buffalo, 12-1, Wednesday

April 25, 2012
The Buffalo Bisons hit four home runs and pounced on Scott Elarton and the IronPigs early and often Wednesday morning as they thumped Lehigh Valley 12-1 in front of 8,303 fans on the first Education Day of 2012 at Coca-Cola Park.

Josh Satin led the offensive explosion finishing a triple shy of the cycle, going 4-for-5 with a home run, two doubles and three RBI as the Bisons (12-7) claimed the rubber-game of the three-game set. Bisons catcher Lucas May added a two-run homer and finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI.

Omar Quintanilla capped a four-run second inning with a two-run home run, his first of the season.

The IronPigs didn't have nearly as much firepower on Wednesday morning.

The Mets No. 2 prospect according to Baseball America, RHP Matt Harvey, turned in an outstanding effort for the Bisons. Harvey, just a second year pro, was perfect thru four innings and allowed just four hits and struck out five in seven scoreless frames to earn his second straight win with Buffalo.

The Mets prospect also chipped in offensively blasting a two-run home run in fifth inning, becoming just the second Bisons pitcher to homer in the last 17 years. The first one came Monday night here at Coca-Cola Park when Dylan Owen took Pat Misch deep to left field.

Harvey (2-1), who came in struggling in his first Triple-A season, entered Wednesday's game with a 6.63 ERA in his first four Triple-A starts. After his seven scoreless innings he lowered that mark to 4.85.

Meanwhile, Elarton (1-1) entered the contest with the second-best ERA (0.56) in the International League, allowing just one run in his first 16 innings pitched in three starts.

But he was no match for the red-hot Bisons' bats on this day. Buffalo scored four in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take command of the game early and send Lehigh Valley to one of their worst losses in franchise history. The IronPigs have lost by 11 runs on two other occasions, the last coming on July 21, 2009 at Charlotte (11-0).

The IronPigs got on the board in the ninth inning on a two-out, RBI double by Cody Overbeck to deep centerfield. Overbeck is hitting .341 (14-41) with nine RBI over his last 11 games.

The IronPigs look to bounce back on Thursday night as the road team when they open a four-game set against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees at Coca-Cola Park. RHP Dave Bush (1-2, 3.07) gets the nod for the IronPigs against Yankees RHP Ramon Ortiz (0-1, 5.25). First pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
