Cardinals Strike Early, Beat Hammerheads 7-2

July 1, 2012
The Palm Beach Cardinals (5-6) took advantage of a strong performance by Anthony Ferrara, as they beat the Jupiter Hammerheads (5-4), 7-2.

Ferrara (5-6) got back to his winning ways, tossing seven innings of two-run ball, scattering nine hits and striking out four. After walking a season-high seven batters in his last start, Ferrara was impressive, as he did not give up a free pass.

The Cardinals got on the board early, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Starlin Rodriguez brought in the first one with a sacrifice fly to left field, while Geoff Klein singled in Ronny Gil to make it 2-0.

The Hammerheads answered with a run on second, as J.T. Realmuto smacked his seventh home run of the season to cut the lead to 2-1. The Cardinals came right back with a run in the third and fourth innings to extend their lead to 4-1.

The Hammerheads made it interesting in the fifth, as Alfredo led off with a single to start the frame. He was doubled in by Danny Black, which cut the lead to 4-2 with Marcell Ozuna and Christian Yelich due up. Ozuna was quickly set down, popping up to the second basemen Rodriguez. Black was forced out, as he mistakenly forgot how many outs were left in the inning, impeding Yelich from coming up with a runner in scoring position.

The Cardinals made them pay, as Rainel Rosario smacked his first home run of the year in the nest inning, pushing the lead to 6-2. The Cardinals tacked on another run in the eighth inning to make it 7-2.

Reliever Chase Reid finished it off by hurling two shut out innings, giving the Cardinals their second consecutive victory and their fourth against the Hammerheads.

Geoff Klein led the Cardinals with three hits and an RBI, while Rainel Rosario, Mike O'Neill, Ronny Gil each added two hits.

The Cardinals return to action tomorrow night, as they play visitor's to the Jupiter Hammerheads on Muggs Monday. Todd McInnis (0-5) will look to get his first win of the season. Game time is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
