Cardinals Claim Rubber Match Against Hammerheads, 6-4

The Palm Beach Cardinals (6-7) took their first series over the Jupiter Hammerheads (6-5) on Tuesday night, as they scored two runs in the eighth to clip their co-tenants, 6-4.

After the Hammerheads took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth, the Cardinals came from behind to score one in the seventh and two in the eighth to take home the victory.

In the seventh inning, the Cardinals got back-to-back singles from Nick Longmire and Tyler Rahmatulla with one out to put runners on first and second with one out. After Ronny Gil lined out to Mark Canha, Mike O'Neill doubled in Nick Longmire to tie it at 4-4.

In the sixth inning, the Cardinals blew it open, scoring two runs on two fielding mistakes by the Jupiter Hammerheads. Rainel Rosario started the frame by reaching on a fielding error by shortstop Dallas Poulk. He advanced to third base after a double by Luis De La Cruz, placing runners in scoring position with one out. Jeremy Patton brought in a the first run with an RBI ground out, while Nicholas Longmire drove in the second one with a sacrifice fly.

The Cardinals took a lead in the eight and held on to win 6-4, as Aidan Lucas closed it out for his firs career save in the FSL season.

Starter Ryan Sherriff (5-0) struggled in seventh start of the season, as he went a season-low 5 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits. He was cruising along through five innings, but in the sixth, the Hammerheads got to him, connecting for four hits and scoring three runs. Taylor Krick connected with a two-out, two run single to pull the Hammerheads ahead and chase the left-hander in the bottom of the sixth.

The Cardinals got a huge lift from Zach Russell (2-1) out of the bullpen, as he went 2 1/3 innings of shut out ball to keep the game within reach for the Cardinals. He was rewarded for his effort, as he recorded his second win of the season.

Offensively, Mike O'Neill led the Cardinals with a 4-for-5 night and three RBI. His three RBI were the highest output of the season. Nicholas Longmire added two more hits and key RBI single.

The Cardinals will try and make it two in a row tomorrow night, as they host the Bradenton Marauders at 6:35 p.m. for night two of Mega Bash. Chris Corrigan (2-2) will take the ball for the Cardinals as he tries to make it two in a row against the Marauders.
