Dash Complete Sweep with 11-3 Rout Over Sox

Winston's Big Fifth Inning Breaks It Open
August 16, 2012

Winston-Salem, NC (August 15, 2012) - Dan Black's grand slam highlighted a six-run fifth inning, and Winston-Salem cruised to an 11-3 victory on Wednesday night to complete a three-game sweep over the Salem Sox at BB&T Ballpark. The Sox led 2-0 after half an inning, but the Dash scored 11 of the final 12 runs to hand Salem its seventh consecutive loss. Black drove in a career-high six runs, while Dash starter Scott Snodgress improved to 4-0 in five Carolina League starts.

Salem starter Yeiper Castillo faced the minimum in two scoreless innings, but his command betrayed him in the third. He issued three consecutive walks, and all three free passes led to runs in a four-run rally that vaulted Winston into a 4-2 lead. Castillo suffered the loss, slipping to 2-2, allowing four runs on two hits and four walks in three innings.

The Sox nearly tied the game in the top of the fourth, with Jayson Hernandez' RBI double bringing the Sox within a run. With two outs, Matt Marquis singled to right, but Hernandez was thrown out at the plate to end the inning, and the Sox trailed 4-3 into the fifth.

Winston batted around and broke it open with a crazy fifth frame, as eight straight Dash reached to begin the inning against Manny Rivera. With the bases loaded, Black blasted a line drive to the wall in left. The umpires waffled on the landing spot of the ball, failing to make a decisive call as to whether the ball cleared the fence. After conferring, they controversially decided it did soar over the wall and gave Black a grand slam, the sixth Winston slam of the season.

Black finished 2-for-4 with six RBI, while Marcus Semien added three hits and drove in a pair for the Dash. Six different Red Sox recorded one hit apiece, all against Snodgress. Steve Upchurch and Terance Marin combined to strike out eight Red Sox over the final three innings out of the Dash bullpen.

Salem returns to LewisGale Field on Thursday night to kick off a four-game series against Potomac. The opening game features Keith Couch against Matt Grace, with the first pitch slated for 7:05.
