Baysox Defense Falters in Loss

September 7, 2012
Akron, Ohio - The Baysox defense committed two errors leading to three unearned runs in the sixth inning as Akron rallied from behind to fight off elimination with a 4-3 win over the Baysox Friday. Bowie still leads the series 2-1 and the teams will play Game 4 of the Eastern League Divisional playoffs Saturday in Akron.

Despite a rain delay of more than one hour before the game, Orioles 2012 first round draft pick Kevin Gausman started for the Baysox in his Double-A debut Friday. He pitched three scoreless innings and allowed two hits while striking out five batters in a no decision.

The Baysox scored first in the top of the third inning against Akron starter Danny Salazar. Second baseman Buck Britton hit a lead off double to right field and scored when third baseman Zelous Wheeler homered to left field to give Bowie a 2-0 lead.

The Baysox defense faltered and Akron came back to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning against Baysox reliever Eddie Gamboa. Davis Stoneburner hit a lead off double to left field and Roberto Perez followed with a walk. With one out, Stoneburner scored on a single to center field by Tyler Holt and Chun Chen drew a walk to load the bases. Jesus Aguilar reached on a fielding error by right fielder Ronnie Welty that allowed a second run to score and keep the bases loaded before Matt Lawson hit a sacrifice fly to plate Holt from third base. Akron scored the final run of the inning when Adam Abraham reached on a fielding error by Wheeler that allowed a run to score and made the score 4-2.

Bowie got one run back in the top of the seventh inning against Akron reliever Bryce Stowell. Welty hit a one out single to center field, stole second base and scored when Wheeler doubled to center field to make the score 4-3.

Gamboa took the loss, pitching four innings and allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out three batters and walking three. Baysox reliever Andy Loomis pitched a perfect eighth inning.

Stowell earned the win for Akron, pitching one and two-thirds innings and allowing one run on two hits while walking one batter.
