May 19, 2013

ALLENTOWN, PA - Rochester Red Wings starter Kyle Gibson threw a complete game shutout and was backed by a strong offense, as the visitors defeated the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 11-0 Sunday afternoon at Coca-Cola Park.

Gibson (3-5) threw his second complete game shutout in his past three starts, allowing just three hits while striking out eight. The right-hander carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning, but Steve Susdorf broke it up with two outs in the eighth on a double down the left field line.

From the top of the first inning the Red Wings (18-26) were in control, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning on an RBI double from Chris Colabello and an RBI single off the bat of Jeff Clement. In the second inning Rochester struck again when Eric Fryer scored on a fielder's choice for a 3-0 lead.

The visitors then blew the game open with a six-run fifth frame when they sent 11 men to the plate. Clement doubled in the first run, and later in the frame Joe Benson's single scored a pair for a 6-0 advantage. Two batters later Antoan Richardson doubled down the right field line, scoring two, before the last run of the dig scored on an RBI single from Ray Olmedo.

The Red Wings added an unearned run in the sixth and then plated another run in the seventh to close the scoring at 11-0, which ties the IronPigs largest loss of 2013.

Tom Cochran (0-2) suffered the loss for Lehigh Valley, allowing five runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. Bobby Bramhall tossed three innings of relief, allowing two runs (one earned) from the sixth to the eighth. Justin Friend pitched a scoreless ninth inning, his fourth consecutive scoreless Triple-A outing.

For Lehigh Valley (18-25), Susdorf doubled in the eighth, and then Michael Martinez and Jermaine Mitchell each singled in the ninth before Gibson induced a strikeout and double play to finish the shutout.

The series continues Monday when the IronPigs send southpaw Adam Morgan (1-4, 4.97) to the bump against Red Wings right-hander Cole De Vries (0-1, 6.23). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from Coca-Cola Park.
