Overbeck and Cochran Lead Charge Past Bisons

First baseman homers twice while southpaw tosses five strong
June 4, 2013

BUFFALO, NY - Tom Cochran pitched five scoreless innings and Cody Overbeck hit two home runs as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs defeated the Buffalo Bisons 4-0 in the series opener of a four-game set Tuesday night at Coca-Cola Field.

Cochran (1-2) worked five frames, scattering six hits while striking out four. J.C. Ramirez worked a scoreless sixth, Mauricio Robles threw two hitless innings and Jake Diekman nailed down the game, allowing just a hit in the ninth.

Overbeck paced the IronPigs offense, finishing 3-for-4 with his 10th and 11th home runs this season. In the second frame, the first baseman led off with a dinger to centerfield to open the scoring. Then in the fourth Overbeck struck again, as he sailed a ball over the left field wall to score Darin Ruf who had singled as Lehigh Valley took a 3-0 advantage.

The 'Pigs (28-30) added a run in the sixth as Ruf doubled and later scored on Steve Susdorf's RBI double to right field, closing the scoring at 4-0 as the IronPigs bullpen would shut down the Bisons the rest of the way.

Right-hander Thad Weber (0-1) took the loss in his first start with the Bisons (31-26), allowing three runs on five hits in four innings of work.

Ruf, Overbeck and Susdorf, the 4-5-6 hitters respectively, combined to go 7-for-11, scoring all four runs and driving in all four runs. Cody Asche added a double and Michael Martinez singled to complete the IronPigs nine-hit attack.

The series continues Wednesday night when RHP Zach Miner (3-3, 4.73) takes the mound for Lehigh Valley against RHP Chad Jenkins, who has yet to pitch for Buffalo this year. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. from Coca-Cola Field.

Bacon Bits: Overbeck now leads the IronPigs in home runs, and led the squad with 14 round trippers last season… Cochran's win was his first since September of 2012… Leandro Castro saw his 10-game hitting streak come to an end with an 0-for-4 night… The IronPigs defeated the Bisons for the first time this season after getting swept at Coca-Cola Park in April.
