Four Run 7th Costly For Yanks; Fall 7-5 To Tigers

July 9, 2013

Staten Island, NY - July 9th - The Yankees led the Tigers through six innings, but Connecticut scored four runs in the seventh as Staten Island was defeated 7-5 on Tuesday night.

Yankees' starter Jairo Heredia went 5.1 innings, allowing two earned runs off four hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Conner Kendrick blew the save and suffered the loss after pitching four earned runs with three walks and three hits.

Both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Yankees' catcher Isaias Tejeda hit a three-run home run to left. Centerfielder Brandon Thomas - who singled - and left fielder Daniel Lopez - who walked - both scored on the play.

The Tigers picked up two runs in the top of the sixth. Raphael Rhymes drew a walk to begin the inning and scored when Ben Verlander doubled on a fly ball to right. Verlander then moved to third on the throw before Brett Harrison struck out swinging. After Jairo Heredia replaced Conner Kendrick on the mound, Duncan McAlpine singled to left to plate Verlander.

Staten Island grabbed two more runs in the bottom half of the frame to make it 5-2. Thomas hit a one-out solo shot over the right field wall. Two batters later, Lopez doubled before advancing to third on a wild pitch, and scoring on a RBI single off the bat of Tejeda.

Connecticut took the lead in the seventh. Austin Schotts and Dominic Ficociello drew back-to-back walks before Schotts stole second with Raphael Rhymes batting. Both Schotts and Ficociello then came home on a throwing error by catcher Isaias Tejeda. Rhymes grounded out, but Ficociello was able to move to third on the play and later crossed the plate when Brett Harrison singled to right. Ben Verlander, who walked and moved to second on the single stole third and scored on another throwing error by Tejeda. Finally, Duncan McAlpine plated Harrison with a single to center to give the Tigers a 6-5 advantage.

Verlander scored the last Connecticut run in the ninth, when McAlpine reached on a fielding error by left fielder Daniel Lopez.
