Pompey slam highlights seven-run 5th in Lugs win

July 24, 2013

LANSING, Mich. - After mustering just one baserunner through the first four frames, the Lansing Lugnuts (10-21, 42-58) exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth, leading them to a 7-1 victory over the Dayton Dragons (17-15, 45-56) on Wednesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

Dayton starter Ismael Guillon (Loss, 4-7) cruised through four innings before the Lugs teed off on him in the fifth.

Kevin Patterson led off with a triple off the wall in right before Santiago Nessy singled to score him for the first run of the game. After another single and a walk loaded the bases, Dalton Pompey turned on an inside pitch and pulled his first homer of the season over the fence in left for a grand slam, putting Lansing ahead 5-0.

Both of Lansing's grand slams this season have come at home against Dayton - and, coincidentally, both against Guillon. Back on April 22nd, Gustavo Pierre smashed a grand slam against the left-hander in the second inning of an Lugs 8-5 win.

The Lugs tacked on two more against Guillon in the fifth on an RBI groundout from Jordan Leyland, making his Midwest League debut, as well as a Christian Lopes run-scoring double.

It was just the second time this season Lansing had plated more than five runs in an inning.

Guillon lasted 4.1 innings, allowing all seven Lansing runs on six hits. He struck out seven in the outing and walked two. Guillon has now allowed 21 runs to the Lugs in four appearances this season, totaling 10.2 innings.

In the meantime, Lansing starter Ben White (Win, 6-6) cruised through another quality start, his seventh of the season, twirling seven one-run innings. He allowed just five Dayton hits, striking out two with one walk.

Game two of the three-game series comes on a Labatt Blue Light Thirsty Thursday featuring $1 beer and a Plaza Party postgame concert. With first pitch set for 7:05 p.m., Lugnuts southpaw Daniel Norris (0-5, 4.80) will take the hill. In his opposition, Dayton will give the ball to Nick Travieso (4-3, 6.02).
