IronPigs Fall to Red Wings Behind Five-Run Eighth

Sloppy eighth frame costs Lehigh Valley
July 24, 2013

ROCHESTER, NY - A five-run eighth inning catapulted the Rochester Red Wings to a 6-2 win over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs Wednesday night at Frontier Field, as the hosts won for the second time in three games in the series.

Trailing 2-1 entering the eighth, Rochester (55-51) rallied for the comeback win with a five-run inning despite getting just two hits in the frame. The Red Wings Eric Fryer and Oswaldo Arcia provided the only two hits of the eighth, while the combination of IronPigs relievers Jay Johnson and Phillippe Aumont issued three walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch, while catcher Steven Lerud was tagged with three passed balls in the inning.

The blown lead overshadowed another strong outing from Tyler Cloyd, who went the first seven innings and allowed just a first inning solo homer to Chris Parmelee. The right-hander surrendered two hits on the evening and struck out six while walking only one.

Both runs for Lehigh Valley (52-53) came in the second frame as Cody Overbeck singled and Josh Fields followed with a double to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Steve Susdorf then scored Overbeck with a sacrifice fly to left field, before Leandro Castro doubled to left field to score Fields for a 2-1 lead.

Both teams were kept off the scoreboard until the Red Wings took the lead for good in the eighth, as they won for the seventh time in 11 tries against the IronPigs this season.

Reliever Edgar Ibarra (1-0) notched the win with 1 2/3 innings of relief of P.J. Walters, who went the first 7 1/3 while allowing just two runs on six hits. Johnson (0-1) took the loss for Lehigh Valley, surrendering four runs one a hit and two walks in 1/3 of an inning.

The IronPigs try to square the four-game series in the finale Thursday when they send RHP Zach Miner (5-5, 4.13) to the mound against RHP Liam Hendriks (2-7, 5.12) who goes for Rochester. First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 a.m. from Frontier Field.
