August 19, 2013

TROY, NY --- Ryon Healy hit a two-run homer in the first and B.J. Boyd a three-run homer in the second inning as the Vermont Lake Monsters scored six runs over the first two innings for a 7-2 New York-Penn League victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats on Monday night at Bruno Stadium.

Boyd lined a one-out single to left in the top of the first and scored on Healy's two-run homer to left. It was the 2013 third-round pick's third home run of the season and the Lake Monsters first home run since August 7th when Boyd and Healy hit back-to-back seventh inning home runs at historic Centennial Field against Jamestown.

Josh Miller, who was 2-for-4 with two runs and a double, gave Vermont a 3-0 lead with a two-out RBI single to leftcenter scoring Luis Baez in the second. After a Boog Powell walk, Boyd lined a three-run homer to right giving the Lake Monsters a 6-0 advantage. It was Boyd's team-leading seventh home run and marked the fifth time this season that Vermont has hit two home runs in a game (5-0 record).

Boyd added a single in the fourth inning and was 3-for-5 on the night after going 2-for-21 in the first five games of the roadtrip. Healy and Luis Baez both had pair of hits for the Lake Monsters, who had 10 hits on the night for their first double-digit hit game since back-to-back 10-hit games August 6th and 7th.

Starter Kyle Finnegan (3-3) allowed one unearned run on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts over five innings for the win, while Bobby Wahl gave up one run on two hits with no walks and five strikeouts over three innings. Lake Monster pitchers have allowed just three earned runs over 54 innings in Vermont's last six wins and the Lake Monsters have not allowed more than two earned runs in any of the team's last 11 wins.

Ryan Dineen and Tyler White both had two hits for the ValleyCats, while starter Tanne Bushue (3-4) allowed six runs on five hits over the first two innings. Tri-City (35-25) fell one-half game behind Lowell (34-23) for first-place in the Stedler Division.

Vermont (29-31) have split the first six games on its seven-game roadtrip with one remaining on Tuesday night at Tri-City. The Lake Monsters will then return to historic Centennial Field for a five-game homestand August 21-25 beginning with 25-cent "Hot Dog Heaven" on Wednesday.
