Salisbury, MD - The Baltimore Orioles announced on Tuesday night that Orioles infielder Ryan Flaherty has been optioned to the Delmarva Shorebirds. He is expected to play for the Shorebirds on Wednesday, August 28 and Thursday, August 29 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

Flaherty, 27, has played in 75 games for Orioles this season. Flaherty was batting .218 with eight home runs and 20 runs-batted-in for the Orioles.

The former first round draft pick of the Chicago Cubs in 2008 was selected by the Orioles in the 2011 Rule 5 draft.

In 2012, Flaherty hit .216 in 77 games for the Orioles.

The Portland, Maine native was the Maine Gatorade High School Player of the Year in 2005 and was a Second Team All-American at Vanderbilt during his Sophomore season.

Flaherty will become the first player with major league time to play for the Shorebirds in 2013.

The Shorebirds will make a corresponding roster move on Wednesday to open a spot for Flaherty.
