Starter Matt Wisler and three relievers combined on a four-hitter as San Antonio edged Arkansas 1-0 in Game 1 of the Texas League Championship Series Tuesday night at Wolff Stadium.
The Missions scored what proved to be the game's only run in the bottom of the second against Travelers' starter Brandon Hynick. The right-hander picked up two quick outs before serving up a double to Yeison Asencio. Catcher Austin Hedges followed with an RBI single up the middle, giving San Antonio an early 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Arkansas wasted a golden opportunity to draw even against Wisler. C.J. Cron led off the frame with a ground-rule double to right. Robbie Widlansky moved Cron to third when he followed with a ground out to second. After a Jimmy Swift ground out failed to bring in Cron, Kaleb Cowart worked a walk to extend the inning. Fortunately for the Missions, Wisler ended the threat by getting Travis Witherspoon to line out to right.
Wisler (1-0) breezed through the rest of his night, allowing just three hits and three walks, while striking out six over six and two-thirds innings. In his two postseason starts, the Bryan, OH native has allowed just one run on five hits in 13 innings of work.
Relievers Ryan Kelly, Leonel Campos and Jeremy McBryde combined to record the final seven outs for San Antonio, who picked up their second shutout of the postseason. San Antonio had seven, 1-0 wins in the regular season.
Hynick (0-1) was the hard-luck loser, despite allowing just one run on four hits and one walk, while striking out eight in a complete-game performance. The 28-year old retired the final 17 Mission hitters on his night.
Game 2 will be Wednesday at Wolff Stadium, with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Eddie Bonine (1-0, 0.00) will take the ball for the Missions, while the Travs will counter with lefty Michael Roth (1-0, 1.29).
Notes: Game 1 was played in a brisk 1 hour, 59 minutes, the quickest game for San Antonio in 2013.
