Reds Announce Mustangs Field Staff

Dick Schofield to Serve as Billings Skipper in '14
January 6, 2014

BILLINGS, MT - The Cincinnati Reds have formally named Dick Schofield as the new field manager for the Billings Mustangs. Schofield replaces Pat Kelly, who managed the Mustangs for the past three seasons (2011-13). Kelly will manage the Bakersfield Blaze, the Reds Class-A affiliate of the California League.

Joining Schofield are Kevin Mahar, Derrin Ebert and Andrew Cleves. Mahar returns for his second season as the Mustangs hitting coach, while both Ebert (pitching coach) and Cleves (athletic trainer) arrive in Billings for their first season, respectively.

"We are looking forward to working with Dick and the entire coaching staff this season," said Gary Roller, Mustangs General Manager. "Dick's success and experience, both as a former player and now as a coach, will prove invaluable in the development of the younger players, both on and off the field. The Reds have the highest regard for Dick, Kevin and Derrin, and we're confident that each of them will represent the Mustangs and the community of Billings in the most professional manner."

Schofield, 51, enters his second season in the Reds organization. He spent the 2013 season as the hitting coach for the Class-AA Pensacola Blue Wahoos. Previously, Schofield was a member of the Angels' minor league system, serving as a roving infield coordinator in 2012 and the hitting coach for Class-A Inland Empire in 2011.

"Dick Schofield has a very high baseball IQ and has been around the professional game his entire life," said Reds Director of Player Development Jeff Graupe. "He was known as an intelligent player and that has carried over to a very successful coaching career. We are excited about him managing some of our youngest players and teaching them how to respond to the professional environment."

A former shortstop, Schofield played 14 Major League seasons (1983-96) with the California Angels, New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers. He played on the Angels 1986 Western Division championship team, and was a member of Toronto's 1993 World Series championship club. Schofield was selected by California in the first round (third overall) of the 1981 draft and made his Major League debut for the Angels on September 8, 1983.

The Mustangs open the 2014 season at Dehler Park on Monday, June 16 when they host the Great Falls Voyagers at 7:05 pm MST.
