2014 Opening Day Roster Announced
JUPITER, Fla. - The Miami Marlins announced the 2014 opening day roster for the Jupiter Hammerheads. The roster includes five of the Marlins' top 30 prospects according to Baseball America. The Hammerheads roster includes 13 pitchers, two catchers, six infielders, four outfielders and two players on the disabled list. Sixteen of the 27 players on the roster played for Jupiter at some point during the 2013 season.
The roster is highlighted by right handed pitcher Trevor Williams who is Miami's 11th best prospect according to Baseball America. Williams was drafted by the Marlins in the second round of the 2013 draft out of Arizona State University. In his first professional action last year Williams went 0-2 with a 2.38 ERA in 12 starts split between the GCL Marlins, Batavia and Greensboro. He struck out 24 and walked just eight in 34 innings in 2013.
Williams will be joined on the pitching staff by a trio of other top prospects, Colby Suggs (the 17th best Miami prospect according to BA), Austin Brice (the 27th best Miami prospect according to BA) and Joshua Hodges (the 29th best Miami prospect according to BA).
Suggs finished his first professional season last year in Jupiter posting a 3.93 ERA in 14 games for the Hammerheads.
Brice went 8-11 with a 5.73 ERA in 26 games (23 starts) for Greensboro last season.
Hodges returns to Jupiter after appearing in 27 games for the Hammerheads in 2013. Last year he posted a 3.60 ERA and 84 batters in 132 innings.
Austin Barnes (above), the Marlins' 20th best prospect according to Baseball America, will be one of the men behind the plate for the Hammerheads to start the season. Last year Barnes split time between Jupiter and Double-A Jacksonville and he will start 2014 with a return trip to Jupiter. Josh Adams, who spent all of 2013 with Jupiter as a corner infielder, will share the catching duties with Barnes to begin the year.
Slugger Viosergy Rosa will add some pop to the Hammerheads lineup. In 2013 Rosa played with Greensboro and hit 23 home runs, the second most homers among all Miami Minor Leaguers.
Outfielder Cameron Flynn also makes the jump from Greensboro after hitting .308 with the Grasshoppers in 2013.
The Hammerheads will take the field, behind new manager Brian Schneider, for the first time on April 3rd at 6:35 p.m. at Roger Dean Stadium against the Ft. Myers Miracle. The first chance for fans to see the 2014 Hammerheads will be tomorrow when Jupiter takes batting practice from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. during the Season Ticket Holder BBQ. Season tickets are still available for all 140 Jupiter Hammerheads and Palm Beach Cardinals games for just $225.
