Cabrera Returns to I-Cubs

April 4, 2014

Des Moines, IA - A familiar face returns to Principal Park as RH Alberto Cabrera joins the Iowa Cubs' bullpen tonight. The Chicago Cubs designated Cabrera for assignment on March 30, he cleared waivers, and has come back to triple-A on an outright assignment. The Cubs have transferred RH Casey Coleman to their short-season Boise roster. He will report to the team's complex in Mesa, Arizona.

Cabrera has spent time with Iowa in each of the last three seasons and is 6-9 with a 6.38 ERA (91ER/128.1IP) in 47 games, including 17 starts. He made his major league debut in 2012 and was a September call-up last year. In 32 career appearances with Chicago, Cabrera is 1-1 with a 5.21 ERA (16ER/27.2IP), 23 walks, and 31 strikeouts.

Cabrera began last season in the starting rotation at double-A Tennessee and was 9-3 with a 3.20 ERA (40ER/112.2IP) in 18 starts. He was selected to the Southern League All-Star team at mid-season before his promotion to Iowa on July 18.

The Cubs signed Cabrera as a non-drafted free agent on July 7, 2005 and added him to the 40-man roster on November 19, 2010.

The Cubs host the Memphis Redbirds in game two of a four-game series tonight at 7:05 at Principal Park. The gates will open at 5:35 for the first Mediacom Fireworks Friday of the season and fans will receive magnet schedules on their way into the game sponsored by Hicklin Garage Doors and Pittsburgh Paints.
