Smokies' Darvill Downs Lookouts 8-2

Darvill Collects 3 Hits & 3 RBI, DeVoss & Bruno Go Back-To-Back
April 13, 2014

Tennessee shortstop Wes Darvill collected a team-high three hits and drove home three, while center fielder Zeke DeVoss and second baseman Stephen Bruno smacked back-to-back jacks in the second inning as the Smokies toppled the Chattanooga Lookouts 8-2 in their series finale Sunday afternoon at Smokies Stadium.

The win gives the Smokies a 4-1 series victory over the Lookouts, and evens Tennessee's overall record to .500 at 5-5. The defeat drops Chattanooga to a 3-7 tally in 2014.

Darvill (3-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 1 BB) reached base in all four of his plate appearances, collecting a team-high three hits while driving in three runs, and was the lone player from either side to record a multi-hit effort. The shortstop has heated up at the plate in his last two games, collecting five hits in his last six at bats after starting the year 0-for-15.

After Chattanooga took the early advantage thanks to SS Ozzie Martinez's RBI single in the second, the Smokies would answer right back with a six spot in the next half inning. 3B Kris Bryant and RF John Andreoli both walked before SS Wes Darvill brought both home with his double to right to give Tennessee the lead. Then, after starting pitcher Matt Loosen helped his own cause with a run-scoring single to left, CF Zeke DeVoss and 2B Stephen Bruno smashed back-to-back jacks to cap the six-run frame and put the Smokies up 6-1.

It would become 6-2 when the Lookouts got one of those six scores back in the fourth. RF Jeremy Hazelbaker began the inning with a base knock to right, before being plated via pinch hitter Brian Cavazos-Galvez's RBI double down the left field line.

Tennessee would tack on additional insurance in the seventh, scoring a run on a bases-loaded free pass before Darvill drove home his third RBI with a single to right. It was a pedestrian day at the plate for both Smokies and Lookouts hitters, with the two teams combining to draw 16 walks, as well as a hit-by-pitch.

In addition to driving in a run, Loosen (5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 5 SO) earned the win to improve to 1-0 after giving up two earned runs on four hits, striking out five in five frames pitched, while Lookouts starter Garrett Gould (2.0 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO) suffered the defeat to drop to 0-2. The Smokies relief corps of Lendy Castillo (1.2 IP, 1 H, 3 BB, 3 SO), Hunter Cervenka (0.1 IP, 1 SO) and Armando Rivero (1.2 IP, 3 SO) would then join forces to silence Chattanooga hitters the rest of the way, combining to yield just one hit in the final four frames.

The Smokies remain at home and will begin a five-game series with the Jackson Generals, the Double-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, on Monday evening. Right-hander C.J. Edwards (0-0, 0.93), the 28th-best overall prospect in the game according to Baseball America, is expected to get the nod for Tennessee, while the Barons are slated to give the ball to right-hander Jon Fries . First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. at Smokies Stadium.

It's the first Low Fare Monday of the season, presented by McGhee Tyson Airport, which gives fans plenty of bang for their buck. Hot dogs, popcorn and sodas will all be on sale for just $1 dollar each.

Tickets for that contest and the remaining games of Tennessee's ten-game homestand, which lasts through Friday, April 18, are still available, and can be purchased at www.smokiesbaseball.com, or by calling the Smokies Ticket Office at (865) 286-2300.
