Goodwin, Chiefs walk off in 11th

Outfielder slashes game-winning single
April 18, 2014

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, defeated the Rochester Red Wings, 6-5, in 11 innings, on Friday night. Syracuse won in walkoff fashion when Brian Goodwin drove in Jose Lozada with one out in a game that lasted nearly four hours. The Chiefs picked up their first extra-inning win on the season.

First baseman Brock Peterson started things off in the 11th, doubling against Red Wings right-hander A.J. Achter. Chiefs manager Billy Gardner Jr. then pinch-ran Lozada for Peterson. Red Wings manager Gene Glynn made a move of his own, replacing Achter with Matt Hoffman. The southpaw intentionally walked catcher Jonathan Solano before Goodwin singled to right field to end the game.

The Chiefs led heading into the ninth inning, but the Red Wings rallied against right-hander Ryan Mattheus. With two outs, second baseman James Beresford singled scoring shortstop Danny Santana. The Red Wings would register no more base runners for the rest of the game.

Rochester (7-7) took the lead just four batters into the game. After third baseman Deibinson Romero walked, first baseman Chris Parmelee connected on a two-run home run off of right-hander Taylor Hill to give the Red Wings a 2-0 lead.

Syracuse (6-8) would strike back in the second inning using the long ball. Catcher Jhonatan Solano clubbed a solo home run to left field cutting the deficit to one.

The Chiefs extended their lead in the third inning against 6'9 right-hander Alex Meyer. Second baseman Josh Johnson led off the frame with a walk. Center fielder Eury Perez followed with a walk. One batter later, designated hitter Will Rhymes lined a double to center to score Johnson. The Chiefs would add another run as Perez would score on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Brock Peterson.

The Chiefs added two more runs in the fourth inning. After back-to-back singles by third baseman Brandon Laird and left fielder Erik Komatsu, Brooks Raley entered in a relief appearance for Meyer. The right-hander struggled with his command, walking Emmanuel Burriss to load the bases. With two outs and the bases loaded, Rhymes would be hit by a pitch to score Laird. The Chiefs added their fifth run when Peterson worked a full-count walk, scoring Komatsu.

After a single by former Chief Chris Rahl to begin the fifth inning, Beresford lined a double to right field to score Rahl. The Red Wings would tack on another run in the sixth to cut the Chiefs' lead to 5-4.

The Chiefs and Red Wings will resume their series with the second of a four-game set on Saturday afternoon at 2:00. Syracuse right-hander Omar Poveda will make his third start of the season against Rochester left-hander Kris Johnson.
