Giants Hang On For 10-9 Victory Over Rawhide

Mac Williamson ties team record with five hits
April 24, 2014

SAN JOSE - Mac Williamson went 5-for-5 and Jesus Galindo homered for a second straight game leading the San Jose Giants to a 10-9 victory over the Visalia Rawhide on Thursday evening at Municipal Stadium. San Jose jumped out to a 10-1 lead after three innings before holding off the Rawhide late to snap a four-game losing streak.

Williamson singled three times and doubled twice to tie the San Jose Giants single-game record for hits. The starting DH added three runs and two RBI's to lead a 16-hit offensive attack. Mitch Delfino (4-for-5, 2 RBI) also contributed four singles for the Giants while Galindo (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI), Blake Miller (2-for-5, 3B) and Elliott Blair (2-for-4, SB) produced two hits each.

San Jose exploded early plating four runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 4-0 lead. Consecutive singles from Galindo and Miller started the frame before Williamson laced an RBI double into the right field corner. Delfino followed with a single to score Miller for a 2-0 advantage. Ben Turner was up next and his line drive to right was dropped by Visalia Socrates Brito for an error. Williamson scored on the play to make it 3-0 as Turner was credited with a sacrifice fly and an RBI. Two batters later, Chuckie Jones delivered a sacrifice fly extending the lead to 4-0.

The Giants kept the pressure on in the bottom of the second as back-to-back two-out singles from Williamson and Delfino put runners on first and second. Turner then ripped a line drive into right that dropped in front of the diving Brito and rolled well behind the right fielder. Williamson and Delfino scored on the plate while Turner raced into third with a triple.

After the Rawhide scored once in the top of the third, San Jose came back with another four-run outburst in the bottom of the frame. With a runner on first and two outs, Galindo launched a towering fly ball over the fence in right center field for a two-run homer. The rally continued when the next batter, Miller, tripled down the right field line before Williamson came through with an RBI double. Delfino then lined a single to center plating Williamson for a 10-1 Giants lead.

Martin Agosta started on the mound for San Jose and limited Visalia to a single run over the first four innings before running into trouble in the top of the fifth. The Giants right-hander had retired six straight hitters until Evan Marzilli's one-out triple in the top of the fifth. Ronnie Freeman followed with a single to score Marzilli and then Raul Navarro singled to put another runner on base. After Brandon Drury's single loaded the bases, Alex Glenn lined a single up the middle to score two runs trimming the lead to 10-4.

Mason McVay (2/3 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) relieved Agosta to begin the top of the sixth and struggled out of the bullpen for the Giants retiring just two out of the seven batters he faced. The first four hitters of the sixth inning reached base for the Rawhide against McVay on three singles and a walk and all four scored runs. Drury's two-out, two-run single cut the deficit to 10-8 before Jorge Bucardo was summoned from the bullpen and he struck out Glenn to end the inning and prevent further damage.

After Bucardo (1 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) worked out of a runners at first and third, none out jam in the top of the seventh to keep the lead at 10-8, Tyler Mizenko (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) breezed through a perfect eighth inning for the Giants. Steven Okert then entered the game to begin the top of the ninth, but surrendered a first-pitch home run to Drury to start the inning. The home run, Drury's team-leading sixth of the season and third in the last two nights, brought Visalia to within 10-9.

After the long ball, Okert issued a walk to Glenn and then Ryan Court reached on a fielding error committed by Delfino at third. Fidel Pena was up next and he advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Okert recovered to set down Jacobs on a grounder back to the mound, but then Marzilli was hit by a pitch to load the bases. However, with the Giants clinging to a one-run lead and the potential tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, Okert settled down to strikeout Freeman with a 2-2 fastball to end the game.

Agosta (1-1) was credited with his first win of the season after tossing five innings and allowing four runs (all earned) on eight hits. Agosta walked one and struck out four. Okert (1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) earned his fourth save of the year.

Rawhide starter Brandon Sinnery (2-1) suffered the loss after yielding all 10 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits over 2 2/3 innings. Visalia relievers Henry Garcia (3 1/3 IP) and Keith Hessler (2 IP) combined to hold the Giants scoreless over the last 5 1/3 innings.
