Homers Propel Baysox Past SeaWolves

May 4, 2014

Bowie, Md. - The Baysox (15-14) scored their first five runs of the game on a pair of home runs from Dariel Alvarez and Christian Walker on the way to an 8-5 win over the Erie SeaWolves (12-15) Sunday afternoon.

Alvarez extended his current hitting streak to 11 games and extended his league-leading RBI total to 25. Alvarez has recorded a hit in 26 of his 27 games played this season. Walker recorded his second three-RBI game of the season with his team-leading sixth home run.

Alvarez helped the Baysox out to an early lead in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer off Erie starter Tommy Collier. With two outs and Sharlon Schoop on first base, Alvarez drove the ball to left field to give Bowie the 2-0 advantage.

The SeaWolves got on the board in the top of the fourth inning against Baysox starter Jake Pettit. Eugenio Suarez drew a lead off walk, moved to third base on an Aaron Westlake single to right field and scored on a Ramon Cabrera sacrifice fly to make the score 2-1.

Erie tied the game in the top of the sixth inning. Cabrera hit a one-out single to left field and Wade Gaynor followed with a walk. Cabrera scored on a single by Francisco Martinez and fielding error by left-fielder K.D. Kang to tie the game 2-2.

The Baysox blew the game open in the bottom half of the inning. David Freitas led off the inning with a walk and Niuman Romero followed with a single. Walker then hit a one-out home run to left field to get the scoring started. Chih-Hsien Chiang followed with a two-out triple to right field and Slade Smith then replaced Collier on the mound. Rosa plated Chiang with a single to center field and, after a wild pitch, Rosa scored on a ground-rule double to right field from K.D. Kang to give Bowie a 7-2 lead.

It was kind of a funny series in that virtually every ball was hit well, but we had mixed results," said Manager Gary Kendall. "The hope for that inning was to get a couple guys on and then get that key hit and fortunately that came off Walker's bat today. We were able to tack on a couple runs after that, which was nice to see because it turned out we needed them."

The SeaWolves cut into the lead in the top of the seventh inning against Baysox reliever Marcel Prado after back-to-back doubles from Westlake and Cabrera made the score 7-3.

Bowie got the run right back in the bottom half of the inning against Erie reliever Ryan Robowski. Romero hit a one-out single to center field and moved to second base on a two-out single to center field from Walker. Alvarez brought Romero home with a single to center field to give the Baysox an 8-3 lead.

Erie mounted a rally in the top of the ninth inning against Baysox reliever Ashur Tolliver. Jason Krizan drew a lead off walk and moved to third base after a Suarez double to left field. Westlake brought both runners home with a single to center field, but Tolliver was able to limit the damage and get out of the inning with the score 8-5.

Pettit pitched five and one-third innings and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out two and walking four in the no decision. Prado pitched two and two-thirds innings in relief and allowed one run on three hits while striking out two and walking one in the win. Tolliver pitched the ninth inning and allowed two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out one batter.

Collier took the loss for Erie, pitching five and two-thirds innings and allowing six runs on five hits and one walk.

LHP Anthony Vasquez makes his Baysox debut Monday as the team plays the first game in a three game series with the Altoona Curve. He will be opposed by RHP A.J. Morris (1-0, 1.47).

The Baysox begin a three-game road trip in Altoona Monday, May 5 and return home Thursday, May 9 for a four game homestand against the New Britain Rock Cats.
