Stankiewicz Pitches Drive Past RiverDogs, 6-3

Right-hander hurls 7 shutout innings with 6 strikeouts
June 11, 2014

Greenville, SC - Thanks to a dominant pitching performance by Teddy Stankiewicz, the Greenville Drive (31-34) closed out the first half home schedule successfully with a 6-3 defeat of the Charleston RiverDogs (30-36) on Wednesday night. With the victory, the Drive collected their first win against the RiverDogs in six tries at Fluor Field and avoided a series sweep.

Stankiewicz was in control from start to finish on Wednesday, delivering seven scoreless innings and allowing only two hits with no walks and six strikeouts. After giving up a third-inning single to Dustin Fowler, he retired the final 13 hitters he faced, and five of his seven frames were 1-2-3 innings.

The Drive offense did their part as well, scoring single runs in each of the first five innings, with four of those runs coming against Charleston's Caleb Smith (4-6). A Kendrick Perkins RBI groundout in the first inning put the Drive on top. In the second, Jordan Weems drew a leadoff walk and later scored on another RBI groundout, this one by Tzu-Wei Lin.

Carlos Asuaje got in on the action leading off the third, driving an opposite-field homer to left-center to make the score 3-0. The homer was his team-leading seventh of the season.

Forrestt Allday delivered an RBI single in the fourth to score Weems, who drew another leadoff walk, and Jimmy Rider hit a sacrifice fly to right to score a run against RiverDogs reliever Omar Luis.

The RiverDogs finally got on the board in the eighth against Mario Alcantara thanks to three consecutive doubles that plated two runs, and they added another run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly.

Zach Kapstein went 2-4 for the Drive, while Lin drove home two runs after adding a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Fowler and Michael O'Neill each collected a pair of hits for Charleston.

The Drive finish the first half with a four-game series on the road against the Hagerstown Suns. First pitch for Thursday's contest is set for 7:05. LH Daniel McGrath (1-3, 4.76) will take the mound for the Drive, while LH Hector Silvestre (2-3, 4.50) gets the starting call for the Suns.
