Loons one-hit Lugnuts, 2-1

June 13, 2014

MIDLAND, Mich. - Four pitchers combined to hold the Lansing Lugnuts (31-36) to one hit, leading the Great Lakes Loons (33-35) to a 2-1 series-opening win on Friday night at Dow Diamond.

Great Lakes starter Zachary Bird (Win, 4-8) set the tone, working around four walks with five strikeouts, and the Loons' bullpen combined for four hitless innings, capped by a 1-2-3 ninth for Mark Pope (Save, 9).

The lone Lansing base hit came in the third inning when Matt Dean singled to score Ian Parmley from second and tie the game at 1-1.

It was answered quickly; Malcolm Holland blooped an RBI single to bring in Dillon Moyer in the home half of the third.

Lansing starter Shane Dawson (Loss, 2-3) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with a pair of walks and struck out five batters in three innings.

Reliever Yeyfry Del Rosario also had five strikeouts in three innings, before Brady Dragmire twirled a perfect seventh and eighth in the defeat.

The Lugnuts and Loons play the second of the three-game series on Saturday night at Dow Diamond. Lansing knuckleballer Frank Viola III (0-0, 0.00) will start on the mound, countered by Great Lakes righty Brandon Martinez (1-2, 3.27).
