Delmarva Squeaks By Lexington, 2-1

Shorebirds return favor by winning pitchers' duel
June 21, 2014

Salisbury, MD - A night after losing 1-0, the Delmarva Shorebirds were on the right end of a 2-1 pitchers' duel on Saturday evening. Sebastian Vader twirled a gem for Delmarva, as the All-Star went seven scoreless innings for the win.

A mirror image of the previous night, neither team scored until the seventh inning. Vader successfully stranded the go-ahead run after Lexington put runners on the corners with one out. That gave Delmarva time to strike first in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Austin Wynns lined a single to right field. Anthony Vega trickled a swinging bunt to the mound, but Luke Farrell yanked his throw wide of first base. Wynns hustled around the bases to score on the throwing error. Gregory Lorenzo added an insurance with an RBI single to score Vega.

The insurance run proved key as Lexington got one back in the top of the eighth inning. Frank Schwindel launched a solo home run, his 11th of the season. Donnie Hart was able to strand the tying run on third base after a double by Mauricio Ramos.

Austin Urban completed the victory, as Kemp and Caronia turned a slick double play to finish the game. Urban picked his first save as a Shorebird, while Vader improved to 8-3 with the win. Luke Farrell only allowed two unearned runs, but he suffered the loss for Lexington.

Delmarva goes for the series win over Lexington on Sunday evening. The Shorebirds turn to left-hander Luis Gonzalez (1-0, 1.78) against Legends' lefty Matt Tenuta (2-6, 5.35). First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 pm at Perdue Stadium.
