Lugs edge Hot Rods, earn series split

June 22, 2014

LANSING, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (2-2, 34-39) defeated the Bowling Green Hot Rods (2-2, 34-39), 5-4, on Sunday afternoon at Cooley Law School Stadium, splitting the four-game series opening the season's second half.

A four-run fourth inning pushed Lansing ahead of Bowling Green as the Lugnuts capitalized on two walks, a hit batter, and two wild pitches by reliever Brad Schreiber (Loss, 1-4). Mike Reeves, Ian Parmley and D.J. Davis knocked three consecutive RBIs singles.

First baseman Matt Dean added an insurance run with a towering home run in the seventh inning to give Lansing a 5-3 lead.

Bowling Green threatened in the ninth inning when third baseman Ty Young hit an RBI triple, putting the potential tying run at third with no outs, but closer Griffin Murphy (Save, 12) retired the next three Hot Rods to end the game and take the Midwest League lead in saves.

Lansing starting pitcher Jeremy Gabryszwski (Win, 5-2) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

Reliever Brady Dragmire pitched 2.1 scoreless innings with one hit and three strikeouts.

Making his second appearance with Lansing, catcher Mike Reeves went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

The Lugnuts return to action on Tuesday at Cooley Law School Stadium, opening a three-game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps. Lefty Matt Dermody (3-4, 6.20) will start on the mound for the Lugnuts, countered by West Michigan right-hander Jon Maciel (3-3, 3.27).
