IronPigs' Winning Streak Snapped by Red Wings

July 4, 2014

ROCHESTER, NY - The IronPigs winning streak was snapped at three games after a 12-6 loss against the Rochester Red Wings, who tallied 16 hits in the game.

Lehigh Valley jumped out to an early lead by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning with a two-out rally off of Rochester starter LHP Logan Darnell. After a OF Grady Sizemore ground out and a 2B Tyler Henson groundout. OF Leandro Castro reached base on a fielding error by the Red Wings shortstop, starting the rally. DH Russ Canzler would then single before 3B Maikel Franco turned in two of his three RBI on the day with a triple to open the scoring for Lehigh Valley. The triple was Franco's second of his Triple-A career and 13th by an IronPig this season.

The IronPigs would add to their lead in the third inning, scoring two more off the lefty starter. Sizemore would start the inning with a lead-off single before Henson drew a walk to move the outfielder into scoring position. Castro then came through with an RBI single, extending the Pigs lead to 3-0. The Red Wings would then be hurt by another error, as Henson scored while 1B Jim Murphy reached base on a fielding error by the Rochester third baseman.

The Red Wings would then cut the lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off of Lehigh Valley starter RHP Barry Enright. C Chris Herrmann would get the Red Wings on the board when he scored from first on a 1B Brad Nelson double after leading off the inning with a single. Nelson would then score on a sacrifice fly two batters later after a passed ball moved him to third base.

The two runs would be the only yielded by Enright, who was removed after throwing 103 pitches in four and one-third innings. The Pepperdine University product left the game with a 6-2 lead, in line for his first victory since May 26th, but the Pigs would later squander the lead, leaving Enright with a no decision.

After the Pigs extended their lead back to four runs behind a Franco RBI-double and run scored on a later error, The Red Wings would take the lead with six-runs on six singles in the bottom of the sixth inning. All six runs would be credited to RHP Hector Neris, who had entered the game with one out in the fifth and retired both batters he faced to strand the two runners he inherited from Enright. The Dominican native would then allow five singles in the sixth, leaving the game after loading the bases with a hit-by-pitch and the score tied at six. RHP Phillippe Aumont would then allow the sixth single of the inning, a two-run single by 3B Pedro Florimon, which gave the Red Wings the lead for good.

Rochester would then add three more to their run total in the seventh, with three more singles in the inning. All three runs were scored on Aumont, the first runs the Canadian has allowed since facing these Red Wings on June 12th, a streak of six-straight innings.

These two teams will play the finale of this two-game series on Saturday, with RHP Sean O'Sullivan making his first start since making his Phillies debut last Saturday. The game is scheduled for a 7:05 first pitch, and will be the Pigs final game before heading out west to face Indianapolis and Louisville for four games each prior to the All-Star break. The IronPigs return to Allentown on July 17th, the day after the break, and will play a two-game series against Syracuse.
